Hoops For Kids

Hoops For Kids

As nearly 100 children laughed and played inside the Provo's Boys & Girls Club gymnasium, all taking part in a basketball camp, the event organizer watched happily from the sideline. The fun, exercise-filled activity took place all thanks to Brennan Lovelace, who is just 13 years old.

When the time came for Lovelace to plan an Eagle Scout project, the Boys & Girls Club, which he'd passed often while visiting the Seven Peaks water park, came to mind.

Daniels Fund Scholarships PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 06 December 2010 23:54

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County is excited to announce 3 Daniels Fund Scholarship receipients:

FACUNDO:

"I love my family and I want to be able to help them. We don't make good money, we get by, but we cant afford a school for me. If I don't get this then I wont be able to go to school for a while. I'm not the smartest student but I try really hard.  I want to go to school but I cant do it alone that's why i ask for your help."

When asked about why this scholarship would be important to him: "I would be able to attend one of the best schools in Utah and by going to school I will be able to get a good degree and a good life to help my family with what ever they need. I want to give back to my parents everything they gave to me and this scholarship is the first step to doing that."

When asked about an issue that faces teens today: "They think they are too cool to wear a seat belt. My best friend died two years ago in a car accident because he wasn't wearing one. From now on I never let anyone not wear their seat belt. I stop the car and refuse to go until they put it on. I put it on for them. I make sure everybody has there seat belt on.  I never want to lose another friend."

GASTON:
"My family and I are from Argentina. I lived there for 9 years when my family decided to come. I started school here not knowing English, so it was quite hard for me to start and get going on things. now I speak English and Spanish and I am fluent with both of them. I come from a family full of hard working people. We didn't have the best of times in Argentina so we moved here hoping for a better future, the future that I'm trying to gain. My dad tells me every day that college is one of the few things that will make my future a great one. He encourages me everyday to try hard in school and go to college because he knows what it feels like to need something in life. I promise him everyday that I will try my hardest to have a great future."

When asked about what the scholarship would do for him: "This scholarship would help me a lot to go to college. I would become an architect and I could help the community with designing homes that they would like, and make them safe for their daily living. I would design the homes in such a way that they can be comfortable, and safe."

When asked why he should be selected: "I should be selected for the Daniels Scholarship because it is something I really need to achieve what I promised my dad, which is to try my hardest to obtain a great future. College would help me tremendously to have a great future, but without the funds for college its going to be hard. I feel like I would use this help better then others because I know what I want for my future, and I know that I can be successful in life."

SONORA:
"To outsiders my family is complicated, but it is not to me. There is my mom, her new husband, my little sister and me. We are close and honest with each other. (My biological father abandoned me, young. He married Sunnee, who already had Hayden who is my age; together they had Presley. Because we were so poor, my mom had to put a little brother named Zach, who I saw only once, up for adoption. My sisters dad left us about five years ago.).  My family lives in a trailer. We are happy there. We have a big tree in our yard and when autumn comes we sit under it to eat. We often sit on the porch watching leaves spin to earth and drinking milk. We love milk so much that Mom has to limit our intake, we go through a gallon in one sitting otherwise. My stepdad works 2 fulltime jobs and my mom works 1 to keep us going."

On her plans for college: "I plan on attending Utah State University in Logan, Utah, and doing a double major: Psychology and Animal Sciences with an emphasis on equine management. I chose USU because it has the best Animal Science program in my state (and one of the best in the nation), as well as a great Psychology Department.  When I graduate I want to open a clinic for troubled adolescents, a place where kids with nowhere to go can go. I have met a lot of teens who were simply broken, who felt they had no family, no friends, and no possible future. I once felt this way myself. That is when I began working with horses, which completely changed my life. I developed self-confidence and grew to love life.  This is what I want to enable other teens to accomplish. Psychology will help me better understand what is going on in their heads and facilitate communication on deeper levels with individual young people. With my Animal Science degree I will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to own and care for a herd of horses, and be competent to teach troubled teens the essentials of horse care and training.  I want to attend USU because it has everything I need to pursue my best and highest dream."

From one of her teacher's letters: "Sonora is an incredibly hard worker.  I have seriously never met any
student who works harder than she does.  Her mom recently remarried, but before that was a single mom with 2 daughters.  Her mom works in the cafeteria at our school and does the janitorial work for our school.  Sonora works with her mom cleaning the school everyday at 4:30am.  She also helps her in the lunch room often.  She is also involved with so many different clubs and activities at school.  She is very involved with student government and is the Senior class president.  Sonora has an extremely kind heart.  She is kind to everyone and can often be seen talking to some of the more quiet or excluded students. On top of all that, she is an excellent student. She is always involved in class, actively participating and
contributing to discussions.  Last year she was working on a novel and is probably close to finishing it!  She is an outstanding student and young woman!"
